Arrigo Boito, ne a Padoue en 1842 et mort a Milan en 1918, est le frere de Camillo Boito, l auteur de "Senso" que Visconti a porte a l ecran en 1954. Il est surtout connu pour avoir compose des operas, dont le plus celebre est "Mefistofele" (1868), et plus particulierement pour l ecriture des livrets de quelques grands operas de G. Verdi: "Simon Boccanegra, Otello, Falstaff". On le rapproche de l ecole italienne tardo-romantique de la -Scapigliatura milanese- qui essaie de conferer au romantisme historique italien une dimension fantastique.
