About the Author:
The "poet-ranchman of Texas," William Lawrence "Larry" Chittenden, was born in Montclair, N.J., but came to Texas in his early 20s, working as a traveling dry-goods salesman and sending articles
back to New York newspapers. In 1887 he and his uncle established the Chittenden Ranch in West Texas' Jones County, seven miles northwest of Anson, where he attended a Christmas dance for ranchers and cowboys at the Star Hotel. This was the inspiration for his best-known poem,
"The Cowboys' Christmas Ball," which first appeared in 1890 in Anson's Texas Western newspaper and was later included in Chittenden's first volume of "Ranch Verses" in 1893.
