The Portugal laurel was brought from that country, and is known as the Prunus lutitanica, before 1648. The royal bay, Laurut indica, was brought from Madeira, in 1665. The Alexandrian laurel, Rascut racemotus, was brought from Spaiu before 1713. The glaucous laurel, Laru aggreyata, was brought hither from China, iu 1806. LAURENT ALIA. These were festivals celebrated at Rome in honour of Acca Laurcntia. They commenced abmt 621 B.C., and were held on the last day of April and the 23rd of December. They in process of time extended to other places, and ultimately they formed part of the Saturnalia.--Ovid. LAURESTINE, Viburnum Tinui. The evcrgreon shrub which blooms about Michaelmas, and holds its flowers and foliage through the winter. It was brought to England from the south of Europe, before 1596. There are other varieties of this shrub, which is now a favourite culture in these countries. LAVALETTE'S ESCAPE. Count Lavalette's escape from prison in France affords a striking instance ami memorable record of British humanity and courage. Uc was condemned at Paris for high treason, but escaped from prison in the clothes of his wife: their dresses being changed on the eve of the execution, during an interviow afforded them for a last farewell, Dec. 20, 1815. In this generous enterprise three Britons assisted, sir Robert Wilson, Michael Bruce, esq., and captain J. H. Hutchinson, who were convicted of aiding the escape, and seutenccd to three mouths' imprisonment in the French capital, April 24, 1816.
