Excerpt: ... talion in Oyarzun, and detached two battalions to prevent any interruption from those moving on St. Martial,--the column continued its march to Irun, which by two o'clock was closely invested. This, though but a walled town, and therefore incapable of sustaining a regular attack with heavy ordnance, was, against field guns and musketry, extremely strong. Many months had been employed in perfecting the defences. It was supported and partly covered, by the Fort del Parque, a circular work on a commanding eminence, with steep scarps, ditch, embrasures, and mounting eight guns of large calibre.t--The town-house, an ancient building, with massive walls several feet thick, against which light artillery could make no impression, was converted into a species of citadel The garrison, counting on being able to hold out for several days,- -being assured that they should be relieved,!--and in case of reverse, that they would be put to death in reprisal for former acts,-- fought with desperation. The attack continued with vigour till night,-- during which only a slight occasional musket-fire took place,--but at day-break recommenced. At * In the town there were five guns. f And in fact, the enemy did collect some battalions from the Bastan and the side of Tolosa with that view. seven o'clock (17th May), permission was asked or women and children to be allowed to leave the plaqe, and pass into France,--which was granted. At ten (18 hours after the investment,) the Fort del Parque was captured,--and three columns, of two battalions each,* having surmounted by assault the defences of the different lines of entrance, arrived in front of the consistorial house, in which the survivors of the garrison had now taken post,--and where a sanguinary stand might...
