One night this particular player, who had been loafing around the lobby of a hotel talking to Jennings, finally rose, stretched, yawned, and said: "Well, me for the hay to see if I can't get back some of this old ' pep.'" "That's the stuff," answered "Hughie," heartily. The player walked to the elevator in full view of the manager and climbed aboard. After watching the elevator for a while, Jennings met some friends and went off to a quiet place where they fell to discussing baseball so vigorously that the meeting was not terminated until about four o'clock in the morning. While Jennings was waiting to ascend in the elevator in which the boy was sleeping while it was stopped at some upper story, he saw a familiar figure roll into the lobby. Jennings ducked behind one of those property palms that you find in every hotel lobby where the player could not see him. Then he waited until the wanderer had pushed the elevator button three or four times. At last, the boy was awakened, and the car appeared.
