If it is not so divisible add 1, atid the quotient if there is no remainder) is the number of digits required. If this addition still leaves the number not divisible accurately by 3, add 2 to the number of digits in the cube, and the quotient of this by 3 icill give the number of digits in the cube root. Another Method. (With reversed slide.) Eeverse slide end for end, keeping face towards you. Let inverted scale B in its new position be denoted by S, inverted C by 0 Set 1 on 0 against given cube on A, and find at what point of S and D readings are identical. Except when cube on A is 1, two such points can usually be found on S and D. To know which of these to take p in a given case, the rule which follows will be found useful:--If the cube has 1, 4, 7, etc. digits, the cube root will be found on D to the left of the possible setting on A, which is most to the left. If it has 2, 5, 8, etc. digits, the cube root will be found on D between the possible settings on A. If it has 3, 6, 9, etc. digits, the cube root will be found on D to the right of the setting on A, which is itself most to the right. Thus to find the cube root of 8 5: reversing slide and remembering rule given above, we find 2-04 on S and D scales in contact. If the number were 85, we should take the other reading 4 39 near the centre of rule. If the number were 525, we place the left hand 1 of 0 opposite 525 on A, and then find the cube root 8 06 to the right of this on 3 and D, in accordance with the last instruction. Fourth Eoots. It is hardly necessary to give a separate rule for the extraction of fourth roots, since the pro...
