Had it not been that "the English fakW was universally regarded as mad, this prank might have had serious consequences. His inordinate vanity received a rude shock when Steel (of whom later) mentioned on his return from England that King James, hearing that Coryat was in India, had exclaimed: "Is that fool yet living?;" and he was equally annoyed when, upon his departure, Roe gave him, together with an order for 10/. on the consul at Aleppo, a letter wherein he referred to the traveller as "a very honest poor wretch."
