This was the humble Prayer of the Royal Prophet, who was follicitous to obtain God's Pardon, not only for his own perfonal Sins, but alfo for those to which he had been any ways accessary in others: And who is there amongst us that does not stand in need of this Mercy? Who dares confidently fay his Soul is clear, or that he has nothing to answer for his Neighbour's Sins? What Parents, or Heads of Families, or Perfons in any other Post of Authority, and intrusted with the Care of others, are sure they have not either by Words or Actions, or at least by Neglect, been an Occasion of Sin to those that are committed to their Charge? Nay, is there any one that has the Assurance to assirm, that even in the ordinary Commerce of human Lise and common Converfation, he has always been fo watchsul over himself, as never to have prejudie'd bis Neighbour's Soul by Discourse or Example? I dare boldly call it a Presumption in any Man to make this positive Judgment of himself. AH Sins of Thought, as long as they are stifled within our own Breasts, and are neither manisested by Word or Action, being incapable of influencing our Neighbour, are purely perfonal; but there is not any Sin of the Tongue, nor any finsul Action, if practised in Company, but may in fome measure be an Occasion of Sin to others, either by being an immediate Inducement, or by preparing at least the remote Dispositions to it. The Reafon is, because all fortof Example 'being of its own Nature an Encouragement to Imitation, as is evident from Experience, it follows, that as good Example is an Inducement to Virtue, fo bad Exa...
