Not illustrated.1897 Excerpt: ... OUTLINE OF WORK FOR FIRST GRADE. FOR SEPTEMBER. SCIENCE. Field trips upon the school grounds. The teacher will study the natural interests of the children and change the following plan, if necessary. The children are to record in painting the appearance of the landscape north and east of the school, and also that of the school garden. They will classify their collections as to location, height, color, parts common to all--root, stem, leaves, flower, fruit, seeds. They will find which parts of the plants are used for food by man and animals. (The teacher will notice whether the children discover any other uses for the parts of the plants.) The children will notice what animals are in the garden, and what they are doing. They will classify their ripe and unripe fruits and note the color found in each class. Reason? 2. Field trip to gather September flowers.--The children will classify the flowers and compare them with the garden plants, as to color, height, etc. 3. Trees.--The children will select seven trees upon the grounds which can be observed throughout the year, as--oak, willow, maple, ash-leaf maple, elm, poplar and pine, and paint each in its September condition. They will tell what the trees need, what they give, which tree gives the greatest shade, the reason for shade, what animals are on or under the trees and what they are doing. 4. Color.--By means of the spectrum, the power of the children to distinguish colors will be tested and recorded. 5. Temperature.--The children will judge that it is cooler in the shade of trees and in the house than in the sunshine.
