HIS DAUGHTER SHOWS FILIAL LOVE, DEVELOPS HER HISTRIONIC ABILITY, AND BUYS DRINKS FOR HER FATHER'S MOURNERS. Old man Trummler had "kicked the bucket", as the neighborhood tens derly declared. He had been ailing a long time, as often is the case with very strong men, who pride themselves on never havs ing been ill, but who suds denly, without obvious cause, begin to pine away. No one really knew the cause of old man Trummler's death. He was the victim of an ailment frequently aps pearing in sentimental ballads and old folkssongs. He had died of a broken heart! The rough, aye, vulgar old janitor, who had loved his child as much as he had punished it, was a changed man from the moment it had left him. The change was not a perceptible one, of course, as he had always been taciturn and curt. He knew that because of his dignified silence, he was more respected than any, ever so brilliant chattersbox, who lacked all the sober qualities of a citizen, of which Mr. Trummler was so justly proud. His customary place in the beershouse was always reserved for him. His wishes were anticipated, and not requested; and woe to the waiter that proved ins attentive. The beershouse was the headquarters for a society of military veterans, of which Mr. Trummler was the Commander in chief. His proudest moments were when he stood at the head of his martial band at the funeral of some departed comrade and shouted his brief orders, which seemed to electrify the veterans, most of whom barely managed to keep upright until his voice imbued their tottering bodies with new energy. And now the revered Commander was dead and his sorrowing corps orphaned. It may be said, that he had probably anticipated his buria...
