Passing Ilkley Wells House and Semon Convalescent Home, and pursuing the moorland path which leads to a plantation, we are soon in a position commanding one of the finest views to be had of the upper part of the valley and the mountains enclosing it on both sides. That rounded mass, directly in front, is Popplewell or Middleton Moor, 1,320 feet above the level of the sea. The next is Howber Hill or Beamsley Beacon, a rather conical hill, about 1,330 feet On the same side of the valley, with two broken masses of rock on the summit, is Simon Seat, 1,590 feet; and further still is Whernside in Kettlewelldale, avast rounded mass, 2,250 feet Next it is Strettonside, slightly more pointed than Whernside, whose elevation is about 2,300 feet That somewhat wall-like line of hill, appearing to cross the head of the valley, is Stake Fell, with an elevation of about 2,000 feet The next mountain coming down the other side, a large black mass, is the Birks, a hill separating the two glens into which upper Wharfedale is divided; the elevation of this is about 2,000 feet The hill still nearer Ilkley, a long ridge extending from above Barden Tower to Skipton, is Barden Fell, which has an elevation of 1,700 feet In the opening between the Western extremity of Barden Fell and Rombald's Moor is Kirby Fell, near Malham, with an elevation of about 1,800 feet The rocks have been appropriately chri...
