Surface.--It is generally level, abounding in plains. Soil, Climate, and Productions.--The soil varies; in some sections it is fertile, in others barren and sandy. The chief productions are grain, hemp, flax, hops, and tobacco. The vine flourishes in Western Prussia. Amber is found on the shores of the Baltic. Great quantities of beetroot are raised for the purpose of making sugar. Indnstrial Pursuits.--Three-fourths of the population are engaged in tho cultivation of the soil. The manufactures are mainly those of linen and woolen goods. Commerce is active. Important Cities.--Berlin, the capital, is situated on both banks of the 8pree, a small river which flows into the Havel (hah'vel), a tributary of the Elbe. The principal street, about a mile in length, is divided into five avenues by rows of trees, and is lined with splendid public buildings.
