Glaeser, formerly resident engineer of construction for the Alaskan Engineering Commission employed on the construction of the first Alaskan coal washery built by the Government, is assistant mine foreman of the Burnett mine, Pacific Coast Coal Co. of Seattle. Holman I. Pearl, E. R. Cullity and A. K. Knickerbocker have joined company in the corporation of Allied Engineers, Ltd. They have reopened the office and assay laboratories at Le Pas, Manitoba, and will maintain an office of the company in the Yegen building at Butte, Mont. Henry M. Adkinson made a short address on the Service of the Mine Promoter--the real promoter, not the unprincipled one--at a "get-together" dinner held under the auspices of the Salt Lake stock and mining exchange and the mining committee of the commercial club of Salt Lake City, on April 29. Robert K. Painter, who has been with the General Chemical Co. for eleven years, recently as assistant general manager, has joined with A. V. Schenck and J. D. Stewart to establish a consulting engineering firm at Auburn, Cal. The firm will give particular attention to mine management and development. John C. Branner JOHN CASPER BRANNER, president emeritus of Stanford University, died on March 1. He had been a member of the Institute since 1884, and contributed various papers and discussions to its TransActions. The most recent one, on Oil Possibilities in Brazil, presented at the February meeting, was published after his death. Dr. John Maxson Stillman, in the Stanford Illustrated Reniew, published a biography and appreciation of Doctor Branner from which the following paragraphs are taken: Doctor Branner was born in New Market, Tenn., on July 4, 1850.
