GENIUS: THE GAME
By Leopoldo Gout
Illustrated. 294 pp. Feiwel & Friends. $17.99. (Young adult; ages 12 to 18)
Fourteen-year-old Rex is a programming genius, so when his beloved older brother, Teo, vanishes, saying only that he's going on "walkabout" and he'll be gone "forever," Rex's response may not be that of a typical teenager. Rather than giving in to grief or depression, he writes a piece of incredibly advanced code designed to track and locate anyone, anywhere. The only problem is the program must be run on a quantum computer. Fortunately for Rex, these exist in the world of Leopoldo Gout's "Genius: The Game." Unfortunately for Rex, there aren't many of them, and access is highly restricted. No matter. We understand right from the beginning of this novel that the seeming futility of Rex's quest is not a barrier, it's a speed bump.
Add to this mayhem a climax full of ridiculously bumbling adults, a surprise cliffhanger ending and a villain who appears to have forgotten to bring his motivation for destroying the world, and it seems readers will have plenty of cause to complain -- except they probably won't. There is simply too much here to like. The strengths of this book more than outweigh its weaknesses, especially for readers trained by film to ignore inexplicable plot twists as long as they move at a furious pace. Gout's characters are believable and immensely likable, and their friendship serves as a delightful and realistic anchor amid the fast-moving chaos. Science and technology may take center stage in Gout's fictional Game, but it's the less flashy craft of writing that sells the story.
