About the Author
Born in 1899, Nevil Shute worked as an engineer before founding his own aircraft company in 1931. During the Second World War he served in the navy, doing secret work for the admiralty and finding time to write several novels. He made his home in Australia, remaining there with his family until his death in 1960.
