Richard L. Handy, Ph.D., is an Emeritus Distinguished Professor in the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering at Iowa State University. His studies relating soil properties to geologic origins led to his being elected a Fellow in the Geological Society of America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His mathematical treatment of arching action in soil corrected existing errors and received a major engineering award. Dr. Handy is also known for his writing aimed at non-technical readers.
