About the Authors

Dr. Ken Carter received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and has recently finished a postdoctoral masters degree in clinical psychopharmocology from Farligh Dickenson University. Before joining the faculty at Emory University, Dr. Carter served as a Senior Assistant Research Scientist in the Epidemic Intelligence Service of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Currently he is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Oxford College of Emory University where he is actively involved in research and teaching. Dr. Carter has been a psychotherapist and researcher for over 13 years and his work has garnered awards from the National Institutes of Health, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, and the University of Michigan. In 1994 Ebony Magazine named him a "Leader of Tomorrow" and he has served as a Georgia Governor's Teaching Fellow. Dr. Carter has presented in numerous of professional conferences in the areas of social and personality influences on health as well as on new technologies in teaching. In addition to research, Dr. Carter’s is actively engaged in translating research in psychology to everyday language. He has appeared in magazines such as mental_floss and Readers Digest, and well as in news programs such as Connect With Kids and NBC’s Today Show.

Research Interests My interests lie in the cognitive science of higher-level thought processes; specifically, in how memories of past experiences affect current thinking. Recent projects have investigated strategic control of access to information in memory, the correction of information in memory, and knowledge representations in planning, problem solving, creativity, and design. Application areas include computational modeling, education and training, and complex cognition in engineering, legal and medical settings.
