Synopsis

Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

From the Author

From the Preface: "This work has been prompted by a very serious desire to instruct those who, though willing to acquire information, seek in doing so as much amusement as possible. . . . The writer of this book is animated by an earnest wish to aid, as far as he is able, in the project of combining instruction and amusement; and he trusts he shall not be blamed for endeavoring to render such ability as he possesses available for as much as it is worth, in applying it to subjects of useful information."
