Goodwin analyzes the use of similes—both extended and briefer—and applies statistical methods to compare Apollonius with Homer, especially in the treatment of tenses and moods in final, conditional, and temporal clauses. The work includes introductory forms, a detailed vocabulary section distinguishing Homeric and non-Homeric terms, and a catalog of words peculiar to Apollonius. It further discusses how Apollonius imitates Homer while preserving a distinct Alexandrian diction, and it surveys the poet’s use of the particles and conjunctions that structure epic narration. The study aims to illuminate Apollonius’s stylistic methods and to enhance understanding of late Greek epic and Alexandrian philology.
