Synopsis

Notes And Emendations To The Text Of Shakespeare's Plays, From Early Manuscript Corrections In A Copy Of The Folio, 1632, In The Possession Of J. Payne Collier. Forming A Supplemental Volume To The Works Of Shakespeare By The Same Editor" by John Payne Collier. This volume constitutes Part 4 of a four?part scholarly apparatus devoted to textual criticism and stage history of Shakespeare. It surveys emendations and misprints found in early texts, chiefly across Hamlet, King Lear, Othello, Antony and Cleopatra, and Cymbeline, comparing folio (1632) and quarto readings and proposing manuscript?based corrections. Entries document misreadings, proposed emendations with rationales, and marginal stage directions intended to reflect performance practice, including cues, entrances, and actor assignments. The notes discuss the old folio corrector’s marginal insertions, the influence of contemporary stage conventions and actors, and how editors of later editions arrived at their structure. The notes and introductions explain provenance and authority, and the volume concludes with a Notes section and a publisher’s catalog (Whitaker’s Standard Works). The editorial tone is meticulous and documentary, grounded in manuscript evidence, stage tradition, and the textual history of Shakespeare. It is a resource for scholars and editors seeking precise textual reconstruction and historically informed performance interpretation.
