Abd-el-Kader.--Before reaching his twentieth year he had gained among his countrymen a considerable reputation for scholarship and sanctity, the last because he had already paid two visits to Mecca, the birthplace of the prophet. He was the third son of Mahiddin, an influential emir who was banished to Cairo on suspicion of being concerned in a treasonable attempt to overthrow the government. Abd-el-Kader accompanied him in his exile, on returning from which, in 1827, the French were in possession of Algiers. At the head of his own and neighboring tribes he made war upon the invading French, and after various successes and failures at last faced the foe at Oran, in 1832, at the head of a force of 10,000 men, and, while defeated, established beyond all dispute that he was an able general and a brave man. From this time onward, for the space of a dozen years, this man's life is a history of warfare against the invaders of his native soil. Forced into concluding a treaty of peace with the French in 1837, we find him renewing the struggle again in 1839. Totally defeated in 1842, he sought refuge in Morocco, and so won upon the Moorish ruler as to be able to organize there an army to fight the French. Defeated at every turn, and finally deserted by all save his own tribe, he cont1nued the struggle against overwhelming odds as long as possible, in the end being captured and sent as a prisoner to Paris. Pardoned by Louis Napoleon in 1852, he went to Broussa in Asia Minor. Born near Mascara, 1807; died 1873.
