About the Author

Bl. John Henry, Cardinal Newman (1801-1890) was at first a leading theologian of the Church of England before converting to Catholicism. From 1833 to 1842 he was one of the leading lights of the Oxford Movement that sought to recover for the Church of England many of the traditions and doctrines of the early Church. Gradually he came to doubt the claims of the Church of England and in 1845 was received into the Roman Catholic Church. The next year he was ordained in Rome to the priesthood. He joined the Oratorians and helped found the Oratorian Congregation in England. During his long career he wrote numerous articles and books that to this very day are part of the pride, glory and theological heritage of English Catholicism. In 1878 Newman was made an honorary fellow of Trinity College, Oxford, and in 1879 he was created a cardinal by Pope Leo XIII. He died on Aug. 11, 1890 and was personally beatified by Pope Benedict XVI on Sept. 19, 2010.

Review

With preparations to beatify Cardinal Newman gaining pace, there has been a sudden slew of books devoted to his life and writings to match rising public interest and to properly prepare Catholics in Britain and elsewhere for this historic event. The market appears a little saturated and for this reason it is gratifying to be able to recommend a real gem, that offers great insight into the soul of the esteemed Victorian theologian. Meditations and Devotions is a spiritual work and it consists of prayers and meditations written by the Cardinal at the Birmingham Oratory. The book begins with the oral and often repetitive prayers recited by the Cardinal in private before moving on to contemplative reflections on Our Lady. If at the time of the Beatification you would like to pray like Cardinal Newman then this may be just the book for you. --Simon Caldwell Catholic Herald, 27 August 2010

For those who already have a devotion to the soon to be beatified Newman, this would be an excellent complement to your devotion; for those for whom this devotion is only in its infancy, this, along with the other writings of the Cardinal of course, would be something to consider for your library. --Shawn Tribe, New Liturgical Movement, Sept. 13, 2010

I look forward to exploring this nice, well-bound little volume. Two ribbons will help. It fits easily in the hand, and the leather is good. It lays open well and it is light. This could be a very good book for a visit to a chapel or even when commuting or traveling. --Fr. John Zuhlsdorf, WDTPRS.Com/Blog, Sept. 3, 2010
