Gr 6 Up—The last Friday of Ana Dakkar's freshman year at Harding-Pencroft Academy is like any other—until she watches her home crumble into the ocean, leaving her class of 20 students and their least favorite teacher the sole survivors. Soon, the students learn that the alt-tech of Jules Verne's novels is real and that Ana has inherited a legacy that may be too heavy to carry. A fast-paced, action-packed ride from start to finish, this latest Riordan title promises the same thrills and humor readers have come to expect from his work. The occasional pop culture reference may end up dating the story a bit, but current readers will certainly enjoy them. Ana is Bundeli Indian, and the rest of the students are a diverse mix of ethnicities; one student has severe anxiety and has an emotional support animal. VERDICT May be a harder sell for the typical Riordan fan, but perfect for readers who enjoyed Daniel José Older's Flood City or Rhoda Belleza's Empress of a Thousand Skies.
