About the Author:
Charles A. Eastman (1858 – 1939) acquired his surname from his maternal grandfather, a U.S. Army officer. His three other grand-parents were full-blood Sioux, and it was into that life that he was born. At the age of fifteen, Ohiyesa (his Sioux name) was taken away by his long absent father, a convert to the white man’s ways. He became a Christian and, as his father had done, adopted the surname of his mother. Though at first a reluctant student, he rapidly advanced in his education. He received an academic degree from Dartmouth College and, in 1890, a medical degree from Boston University. He was a physician at the Pine Ridge reservation and tended the wounds of the survivors of the Wounded Knee Massacre. He was very active in promoting the YMCA and was an instrumental adviser in the formative years of the Boy Scouts. He wrote eleven successful books, most of them about the life of the Sioux. He was a strong advocate for his people and was in demand as a lecturer. He spent his final years living a simple life in Canada, the country to which he and his tribe had fled in 1862.
