Systematically integrate moral values into technology design and engineering
Translating abstract moral values into concrete design requirements remains a persistent challenge across engineering disciplines. Design For Values: Aims, Methods and Applications provides the first book-length introduction to this proactive approach, presenting a systematic methodology for embedding public and moral values into new technology. Grounded in thirty years of research at leading technical universities, it moves ethics from theory into actionable engineering practice.
The book introduces value hierarchies that convert broad principles like sustainability and justice into context-specific design requirements. It provides frameworks for navigating moral overload, value conflict, and stakeholder disagreement through structured design approaches. Four extensive case studies illustrate how these methods work in practice, demonstrating translation from ethical analysis to technical specification across varied domains.

A systematic methodology for integrating moral values into technology design
Engineers and designers face growing demands to embed ethical considerations into their work, yet lack a structured methodology for doing so. Design For Values: Aims, Methods, and Applications presents the first book-length introduction to the design for values approach―a proactive framework for systematically integrating moral and public values into new technology. Drawing on 30 years of research, the authors provide concrete tools for translating abstract moral values into context-specific design requirements.
Design For Values introduces value hierarchies as a backbone method for moving from broad ethical principles to actionable design specifications. The book provides a framework for navigating moral overload, value conflict, and moral disagreement through structured design approaches. Four extensive case studies illustrate how innovation and design contribute to realizing societal values from sustainability to justice, with additional examples demonstrating practical application across technology domains.
Written for graduate and doctoral students in engineering, design, and ethics of technology, this book also serves practicing engineers, designers, and managers who need to operationalize ethical commitments. Policy makers working in science, technology, and engineering―particularly artificial intelligence―will find a rigorous framework for applying ethics of technology to professional decision making.
