In an inventive attempt to make one of comics' oldest superheroes--she debuted more than half a century ago--relevant to current readers, Wonder Woman is now the ambassador from the Amazon island Themyscria, come to "Man's World" to spread her people's message of peace and gender equality. She has published a collection of essays and speeches espousing those Amazonian values, and that has made her a lightning rod for protest against her "lifestyle and belief system." In this incarnation, she is relatively deprived of traditional superhero action, though the peace-loving Amazon does reluctantly come to blows with arch foes Silver Swan and Dr. Psycho, and a number of Greek gods put in exertion-demanding appearances. But by and large, Wonder Woman's thoughtful and imaginative modification amounts to a refreshing deviation from most mainstream superhero fare. The creative team involved is up to the challenge. Novelist Rucka balances multiple plotlines, appealing characterizations, and believable dialogue, and penciller Drew Johnson's portrayal captures the superheroine's grace and divinity within smooth and appealing narrative drawing.
