The long-awaited sequel to THE NEW YORK FOUR! There’s nothing more exciting than college life in the big city. But complications can follow you from dark places – and not just from your boring hometown. In THE NEW YORK FIVE, Riley’s sister Angie is making a name in the Lower East Side with her new band, and now Riley is the black sheep of the family. Lona’s murky past appears to have been hiding an alarming proficiency for stalkerism, and Merissa and Ren will confront uncomfortable situations involving older men. But who is the “five” in THE NEW YORK FIVE? This collection also includes special bonus material!

Brian Wood is the Eisner Award-nominated writer of Demo, and the writer of the critically acclaimed Local, Channel Zero, The Couriers and Jennie One. He is currently writing DMZ and Northlanders. Ryan Kelly has illustrated American Virgin, The Books of Magic, The Books of Faerie, Giant Robot Warriors, Local.
When DC canceled its Minx line of YA graphic novels, it left a handful of well-received books wallowing on the vine, such as Wood and Kelly’s The New York Four (2008). But the duo kept up the story in single-issue format, which is collected here. The story picks up right where Four left off during four young women’s freshman year in New York City. The cramped quarters of their shared, off-campus apartment is leading to frayed nerves, and the story does an admirable job of following each girl’s evolving world of twentysomething dramas as they intersect and diverge from one another. A fifth girl is added to the mix, but no character is as developed as Wood’s infatuated portrayal of New York itself, compounded by travel-guide tips on local hot spots and venerated urban institutions as well as Kelly’s fantastic, near-photorealistic backdrops and expressive characters imbued with leggy-model looks and hipster gravitas. The ultimate point, which will resonate with a good many readers, is that simply being young and in New York is something to be celebrated as an art form in itself. Grades 10-12. --Ian Chipman
