Grade 5-8–Twelve-year-old Jessie Bovey is searching for a way to solve her own problems and help friends in her hometown of Baylor, Kentucky during her summer vacation of 1967 in this first novel by Shutta Crum (Clarion, 2003). She and her mother live alone in their small, rural town, but they know everybody around, and that makes Jessie the perfect candidate to introduce Miss Woodruff, the VISTA volunteer working as part of the President's War on Poverty, to the community. Jessie has a few goals for the summer as well, including raising money for her best friend, Robert, to get a new pair of glasses, controlling her own temper, and finding out who her father is. Narrator Julia Gibson provides an authentic voice for Jessie and the myriad of characters, young and old, male and female. Her pacing reflects the cadence of a young Southern girl. Gibson also reflects the spirit of the characters, whether they are innocent, kind, or threatening. Excitement is added to the story when Jessie manages to get into her fair share of trouble, between standing up to the town bully and helping reporters expose to the nation the worst aspects of life in her hometown when they come searching for "local color." Jessie's relationship with her mother and her grandmother are also wonderfully illustrated. Despite some heavy issues included in the plot, such as alcoholism, sexual abuse, racism, and abject poverty, Crum has written a heartening family story which will give young teens a look at small-town life during this period in American history. This memorable first novel would be a good choice for school and public libraries–Casey Rondini, Hartford Public Library, CT
