People also relate health problems to the weather. I can still hear my grandpa saying, “I can smell rain coming and my joints are starting to ache.”The weather is discussed a lot in Appalachia. Everyone knows that if the quarter moon is standing on end there will surely be rain or snow tomorrow and if the quarter moon is lying on its side, everyone can look forward to a bright sunny day. The people in Appalachia are so weather-wise that most people can smell moisture coming. A red sky at dusk gives the promise of a pretty day for tomorrow. A red sky in the morning is an omen of bad weather coming soon. If the katydids start singing in June, there will surely be an early fall, but if they sing in August there will be a late fall. This knowledge is important, because there are a lot of crops and gardens that are raised every year in this land of Appalachia.
