Synopsis

Plot Summary: Two small children, newly orphaned, are separated—one sent east and one sent west, their names changed, and their vast fortune stolen. The story begins fifteen years later when they begin their search for each other. Their only clue is a box the boy had with him when they were separated. Unknown to the boy, now wearing rags, hidden in the box is a treasure worth more than a king's ransom. The story climaxes with one coming from the East with a fleet of jets, and the other coming from the West on an ugly horse.

From the Back Cover

Clyde sat on a branch in the top of the sycamore and cried. As soon as he heard the truck start pulling away, he parted the leaves and peeped out. He watched the big black rig roar off into the night, hauling the only one who had ever believed in him.

Off in the distance, he watched their taillights on the switchbacks—the taillights now blending into the Smoky Mountain stars—and listened as Pip shifted the gears, making the monster truck fight the monster mountain. Finally, the lonesome whine of the big diesel engine faded into silence. The only sound was a whippoorwill calling from the river.

It was time to go.

He tied one end of the rope to the limb he was sitting on, then made a hangman's noose out of the other end and looped it around his neck. He was wearing his two-dollar maroon suit and clip-on bow tie—what he had planned to wear to the Man of the Year banquet. Where he was going tonight, he wanted to look his best.

From the Inside Flap

"O. J. Bryson s writing combines an engrossing plot, vivid characterizations and deftly-paced action into a genuinely pleasurable read. But even more importantly, he manages to capture the sights and sounds of the Tennessee/Carolina mountains and their people. His ear for natural dialogue adds a dimension to rival the best of Sharyn McCrumb. The Box is a fast read, and I couldn t wait to find out what was in the box." William Thompson, Editor Emeritus for John Grisham and Stephen King

"Bryson s ear for dialogue is uncanny." Rosalie Muller Wright, Consulting Editor, Sunset Magazine
