“I did not become a resistance fighter, a smuggler of Jews, and a defier of Nazis all at once. First steps are always small: I began by hiding food under a fence. Now I was smuggling Jews to the Janowka forest.” Irene Gut Opdyke was a teenager when the German army invaded Poland in 1939. She was forced to work in an ammunition factory, and then a laundry for the army. At the same time, she began helping Jews to escape from the Nazis. ‘Resistance to the Nazis’ shows how Irene Gut Opdyke was just one of many ordinary people who found ways to resist Hitler's armies in Europe, and to save people from the Holocaust. This book explains the different forms of resistance, from the efforts of people to keep their culture alive in the concentration camps, to fighting the German arm by sabotaging supplies and communications. Each book includes: first-hand accounts from people involved in the Holocaust; an in-depth study of a key topic mentioned in the book; detailed timeline to help place important events; and a further reading and sources section.

About the Author:
Jane Shuter is a Heinemann-Raintree author.
From Booklist:
Reviewed with Jan Shuter's The Camp System.

Gr. 7-12. These two detailed titles in the Holocaust series offer stark contrast. The Camp System is a bloody, brutal account of the carefully planned concentration camp network where millions suffered and died. Resistance brings together many brief inspiring accounts of ordinary people, Jews and gentiles, who fought back and risked their lives to save others. Both books combine a good historical overview with moving personal accounts and end with a look at a particular event--the processing of arrivals in Auschwitz in the camp system, and the Warsaw ghetto uprising in Resistance. The series design is accessible for browsing or for close reading, with lots of photos and boxed screens. The one intrusive feature is the overuse of bold type for words used in the extensive glossary: words such as Jew, Nazi, race, and concentration camp are in bold every time they appear. Included are sources for direct quotes, maps, a detailed time line, anda list of museums and Web sites. There's also a Web site with information about the horrifying facts and the lies told by Holocaust deniers. Hazel Rochman
