There's nothing more intriguing than a construction site. It's a mesmerizing combination of color and sound, action and excitement: from a wrecking ball smashing into old foundations, bulldozers clearing away the rubble, blocks of concrete achingly being lifted to waiting masons, to steel girders delicately being fitted into place. Paul Stickland has composed all these elements into a celebration of building. Seven high-activity spreads- each with generously sized, child-resistant self-activating pops and a brash, chant-aloud text -follow the process of construction, and culminate in a magnificent foldout scene of the finished project and cheering workers. More spectacular even than his phenomenally successful Dinosaur Stomp and Truck Jam, Big Dig is truly a job well done.

About the Author:
Paul Stickland 's backlist includes some of the most popular dinosaur books ever, as well as such favorites as The Christmas Bear and One Bear, One Dog. The creator of Truck Jam, he lives with his wife and five sons in Somerset, England.
From Booklist:
PreS.-K. This big, bold pop-up book offers a close-up view of construction trucks going about their work of clearing a site and preparing it for a new building. The wrecker, bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, loader, telescopic loader, and crane are featured, but other trucks appear in cameo roles. Women as well as men are depicted as drivers and other construction workers. On the last page, a building begins to rise on the construction site, layer upon layer, surrounded by workers and their trucks. The simple rhyming text identifies the vehicles and sometimes guides children into making truck sounds: "G-g-grrrrrrmm. / G-g-grrrrrrmm. / Heavy blocks / can strain the motor. / Of a TELESCOPIC LOADER." The colorful pictures emerge and move in a satisfying way, climaxing with the large, complex double pop-ups on the last spread. The fragility of the pop-up format may give the book a limited shelf life in library collections, but given the considerable pleasure this particular book offers, it may be worth a try. Highly recommended for storytelling collections, this will be a story time showstopper. Carolyn Phelan
