Synopsis

Before Christopher Columbus's voyages to the West Indies and Central and South America, Europeans knew nothing of the Americas in the New World. His four journeys, beginning in 1492 and ending in 1504, blazed a sea route west across the Atlantic Ocean that pioneered would exploration for years to come. This well-paced account captures Columbus's determination and courage as he led his crews into both unknown waters and unfamiliar native civilizations.

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6–The potential for graphic storytelling to represent the complex stories of these men in a dramatic, cogent presentation is certainly great, but mediocrity in execution diminishes the usefulness of these books. The painted art in Cortés seems stiff and outdated, conveying the narrative while making little use of the emotional possibilities inherent in the comic format. Watton's computer-aided illustrations in Columbus and Washington have more verve and color, but still allow for such ludicrous images as a rigid, stony-faced George Washington thinking to himself, "That was close!" as a bullet strikes near his head. In an adequate fashion, the narratives cover historical events both major and minor, although these events often overshadow the actual subjects of the books. The supporting materials, varying somewhat in quality and value, include "Who's Who" sections and information regarding the background and impact of the figures. The glossary is often odd. In a surprising bit of understatement, one entry describes smallpox as "a disease that causes chills, high fever, and pimples," whereas the main text of another volume states that it is "a bad illness that could scar, blind or even kill people." Readers of all skill levels (and history backgrounds) deserve better than these good ideas gone wrong.–Douglas P. Davey, Halton Hills Public Libraries, Ontario, Canada
