Kindergarten-Grade 2-These Canadian publications, translated from the French, miss the mark in story and illustration. In the first book, Gilda the giraffe loses her spots (the wind blows them away), and, one by one, friends throughout the forest lend her their markings (none is quite right) until her own spots are recovered. "Hurray-It's my giraffe!" a spot exclaims. When it rains, Papaya the Panda shrinks to the size of a mouse and averts danger while Osso Buco the orangutan and Crumpet the crocodile search for him. Instead of fanciful, the texts are cloying, relying too heavily on unusual adjectives and similes. Instead of silly and fun, Sarrazin's bright and nicely laid-out illustrations are cutesy and flat. Perhaps something was lost in the translation; regardless, these titles have little appeal.
