From the Back Cover:

“Rick H. Hoyle has used the study of self-regulation todraw together exciting findings from the usually disparate areas ofinformation processing, temperament/personality, developmental, andsocial psychology. Psychologists from these areas will add breadthand integration to their models of self-regulation, and clinicalpsychologists will greatly benefit from reading thisbook”

Mary K. Rothbart, Distinguished Professor ofPsychology Emerita, University of Oregon

“Failure to self-regulate is associated with personal andsocietal costs (e.g., obesity, alcohol consumption, excessivelending or borrowing, and high-risk investments). Zeal inself-regulating can also be maladaptive, as it is associated withinhibition of emotional expression and authentic behavior. Twentyone chapters from front-line experts offer thoughtful analyses oftemperamental and personality substrates of self-regulation alongwith their interplay with social behavior. This book promises to bean indispensable resource for researchers and practitioners, aswell as both graduate and advanced undergraduatestudents.”

Constantine Sedikides, University of Southampton

The term self-regulation refers to processes by which peoplecontrol their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. When peoplesucceed at self-regulation, they effectively manage theirperceptions of themselves and their social surroundings. Theybehave in ways that are consistent with their goals and standardsof behavior. Conversely, when people struggle or fail atself-regulation, they lose control of their personal and socialexperience. Their behavior does not contribute to the fulfillmentof important goals or correspond to standards of behavior to whichthey subscribe. Successful self-regulation is essential to adaptivefunctioning in all life domains.

Given the central role of self-regulation in adaptive andmaladaptive functioning, it is not surprising that a largeliterature has developed on the topic. This literature is unusualin its breadth, spanning biological, developmental, cognitive, andsocial psychology, and drawing attention from researchers inrelated disciplines such as sociology and education. Despite thecurrent vitality of this literature, there has been relativelylittle study of self-regulation as a feature of personality or howpersonality is reflected in self-regulation.

The primary aim of the proposed volume is to integrate scholarlyresearch on self-regulation in the personality, developmental, andsocial psychology traditions for a broad audience of social andbehavioral scientists interested in the processes by which peoplecontrol, or fail to control, their own behavior. The volume wouldinclude original, integrative, research-based contributions byleading scholars. The resultant book would bridge a conspicuous gapin the burgeoning literature on self-regulation and serve as animportant resource for scholars, students, and practitioners in thesocial and behavioral sciences.
