Alleged mismanagement of obstetric emergencies is the leading causeof litigation in pre-hospital practice. This text and theaccompanying course are designed to prepare practitioners toidentify and manage a range of time-critical obstetric emergenciesspecifically in the pre-hospital setting. It emphasises astructured examination and assessment technique as an aid todetermining what treatment should be provided before transport aswell as when and how urgently transport should be initiated.

POET aims to provide an introduction to the obstetric patient andthe anatomical and physiological changes that occur duringpregnancy (including interpretation of patient-held records andassessment of the obstetric patient). It describes the definitions,risk factors, diagnosis and pre-hospital management of problemsthat might occur throughout the different stages pregnancy andwhich the pre-hospital practitioner may be required to attend. Itaddresses emergencies in early pregnancy (including miscarriage andectopic pregnancy); emergencies in late pregnancy and delivery(including eclampsia, ante-partum haemorrhage, shoulder dystociaand umbilical cord problems); post-delivery emergencies (includingpost-partum haemorrhage and uterine inversion); and management ofnon-obstetric emergencies in the pregnant patient (includingtrauma, cardiac and respiratory disease, the management of cardiacarrest and shock during pregnancy, acute psychiatric illness inpregnancy).
