About the Author
DK Guide to Mammals author, Ben Morgan, is a freelance science editor and writer who has contributed to more than 50 books and magazines on science and natural history. After graduating in biology from Oxford University, he became Assistant Editor of the Royal Society's Science and Public Affairs magazine before becoming freelance. He works regularly on the BBC's flagship natural history titles and worked as a Senior Editor with the team that originated the DK Guides series in 1999. He produced the DK Guide to Space and the DK Guide to Weather, both of which won the Junior Science Book Prize. He is author of Dorling Kindersley's DK Guide to Birds, The Human Body Revealed and Steck Vaughn's forthcoming Atlas of Tropical Grasslands.

Grade 4-6-An appealing overview. Each spread looks at a particular aspect of mammals and gives lots of examples for each area of discussion. Some chapters discuss groups, such as "The Cat Family" or "Monkeys," while others examine other ways the animals can be categorized. For example, "Urban Living" introduces species that have adapted to city life (raccoons and rats), and "Social Lives" gives examples of those that live in groups, such as whales and meerkats. In typical DK style, the author provides lots of topical examples, with ample clear photos on each page. The language is a bit sophisticated, so this title is best suited to competent readers. However, the sound-bite approach of lots of pictures and small text blocks makes it less intimidating, particularly for reluctant readers. The final pages include a mammalian evolution chart, a list of relevant Web sites, and some mammal "records" (the tallest, smallest, fastest, etc.). There isn't enough material here on the individual animals for even a basic report; the main audience for this title will undoubtedly be browsers, who will enjoy the combination of many photos and interesting information.
