About the Author:
Allan Ahlberg is one of the most acclaimed and successful authors of children's books writing today. He has won numerous awards for his books including the Kurt Maschler Award in 1986, the Children's Book Award in 1987, the Blue Peter Book Award 2001 and the Children's Book Award: Books for Young Children 2002. Among his numerous classic picture books are The Jolly Postman books, Burglar Bill, Peepo! and Each Peach Pear Plum. Allan's books for Walker include The Snail House, Everybody Was a Baby Once, The Runaway Dinner, Previously and The Pencil. He lives in Bath. Katharine McEwen graduated from Kingston University in 1996 and has since illustrated around forty children's books for all ages. She is the illustrator of the picture book Cows in the Kitchen, Hey, Tabby Cat! and Here Comes Tabby Cat, four Sam's Science books, the Silver Street series and the Gaskitt stories. Katharine lives in Tonbridge, Kent.
From Booklist:
Gr. 2-4. In this sequel to The Man Who Wore All His Clothes (2001), Mrs. Gaskitt has an extraordinary run of good luck; Mr. Gaskitt continues his succession of jobs; and the twins, Gus and Gloria, become enthralled by substitute teacher Mrs. Plum, who seems too good to be true. Using a cinematic style, Ahlberg cuts back and forth from one story strand to another, gradually revealing clues regarding the sweet Mrs. Plum, who offers everyone chocolates while money and possessions mysteriously disappear. The twins are the first to suspect their substitute, but it isn't until Mrs. Gaskitt plows into Mrs. Plum, causing her suitcase to explode, that the missing items are found. McEwen's colorful, cartoonlike illustrations are a perfect complement for Ahlberg's understated, comic style, and there are several running gags, including a doormat with an ever-changing message, that will keep young readers engaged. The format (short chapters, large print, and easy-reader-style text placement) will appeal to beginning readers, and the sophisticated plot will intrigue slightly older ones. This is a great choice for any reader who appreciates clever writing and humor. Kay Weisman
