From Booklist:
When a little bear goes for a walk, he meets a number of animals who look downright cranky, even threatening. But in this reissue of one of Browne’s earlier works, Bear, pencil in hand, can handle anything. Readers first see Bear walking near trees, grass, and flowers, all depicted in bold, bright watercolor-and-ink illustrations. Looking closely, they will see bright-yellow eyes peering from the dim background. In the next spread, Bear meets Gorilla. He politely says hello on the verso and begins drawing something for Gorilla on the recto. Can youngsters guess what it will be? The page turn reveals a satisfied gorilla clutching a . . . stuffed bear. Bear’s slightly surreal journey is perfectly paced and just right for the most imaginative tots. As Bear continues, he meets Crocodile, Lion, and Elephant before coming to a wall, which he neatly takes care of, too, by drawing a bear-sized hole and stepping through. Although the book closes with Bear saying bye-bye, children will happily imagine further adventures. Preschool-Grade 1. --Jeanne McDermott
