From Booklist:
PreS. Mother Duckie wants to take her ducklings for a swim, but they are nowhere in sight. She searches around the yard and in the garden, under the apples trees and the cabbage bushes. Unknown to her, the bright-yellow brood is gathering behind her, and with each turn of the cleverly trimmed pages, a new duckling appears to join the lineup. Finally Mother Duckie turns around, discovers the happy clan, and gathers everyone into the swimming hole. Barry's uncluttered paper collages are excellent. The elemental shapes and vivid, saturated colors nicely fit the book's handsome design, which features thick paper with rounded covers, and pages that are increasingly cropped to reveal the expanding line of ducks. Toddlers will heartily enjoy spotting the ducklings long before oblivious Duckie does, even as they point and count the family members. Familiar garden objects and creatures march along the endpapers, providing additional counting opportunities. Counting books are ubiquitous, but this is an unusually striking one. Gillian Engberg
