Ethel May Dell Savage (1881-1939) was a British author known by her pen name Ethel M Dell. She wrote over 30 popular romance novels and numerous of short stories between 1911-39. She was born into a middle-class family in a London suburb and began to write stories while very young, many of which were published in popular magazines. Her stories were romantic in nature, often set in India and other old British colonies, and were considered quite racy for the time. Her first novel The Way of an Eagle was initially rejected by eight publishers before being taken on by T Fisher Unwin for their First Novel Library. It was published in 1911 and by 1915 had gone through 30 printings. Although her novels did not meet with favourable opinions from critics, they were adored by her readers and she was soon earning £20-30,000 per year from her writing. This novel was first published in 1923.
