About the Author

Wilkie Collins was born in London in 1824. He lived a lavish lifestyle of good food, too much wine, flamboyant clothes, frequent travel and vast amounts of opium to relieve the symptoms of his rheumatic gout - a form of arthritis. The opium gave Collins paranoid delusions, one being that he had a "Ghost Wilkie" that traveled with him. There is a strong thread of the effects of opium use throughtout "The Moonstone". He was good friends with Charles Dickens and his brother married Dicken's younger daughter, Kate. Dickens and Collins collaborated on a number of works. Collins wrote over thirty major books, with "The Moonstone" and "The Woman in White" being to most widely known. Collins never married but had long affairs with two women, having three children with one of them. WIlkie Collins died in September of 1889 at the age of 65.
