Synopsis

“Originally published anonymously in 1941, this first-hand account of a fighter-pilot’s war grew out of the then 23-year-old Flying Officer Richey began the day he landed his Hawker Hurricane on a grass airfield in France. It is the classic account of the role played by RAF No. 1 Squadron in the increasingly violent air battles that preceded the fall of France in June 1940. By the time the Squadron was withdrawn it had destroyed a total of 155 enemy aircraft – 114 of them in ten days – for the loss of three pilots killed, two wounded and one a prisoner of war. The thrill and terror of air fighting is perfectly captured in a brisk and accurate narrative by a born writer: the book is all the more enthralling for his candour and honesty as he discovers for himself the true nature of the deadly combat in which he is engaged.”
