Born in Portsmouth, Simon Denyer studied Economics at Trinity College, Cambridge, and worked as an economist in the City of London before changing to a career in journalism after a long stint of travelling. As a correspondent for Reuters he worked in numerous places, including New York, Latin America Pakistan, Afghanistan, India and Washington covering various significant events including the 2004 Indian general election and the Asian tsunami. He is now based in Beijing as the Washington Post's China Bureau Chief, as well as being President of the Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia. @simondenyer
Denyer, former India bureau chief for Reuters and the Washington Post, laments the many shortcomings of Indian society in this exasperated love letter to the world’s most populous democracy. In doing so, he reiterates his disappointment in Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who Denyer famously described in a 2012 editorial as a “silent” leader whose honorable reputation had given way to that of a “dithering, ineffectual bureaucrat presiding over a deeply corrupt government.” The limitations of the Singh regime are, however, but part of the problem. According to Denyer, India’s failure to live up to the exuberant predictions of modernization and economic growth made in recent years can also be attributed to an ossified Parliament willing to defy majority opinion to preserve its own entrenched interests and, to a lesser extent, to distortions perpetuated by 24-hour news media. Inadequate commitment to women’s rights, as highlighted by recent attention to horrific gang-rapes and other atrocities, has also held India back. But Denyer also emphasizes that among Indians, democratic engagement is increasingly a reality rather than an unrealized possibility, and even though democratic processes in a country of a billion people can be messy and corrupt, the challenges faced by India are at their heart no different than the challenges faced by the U.S. --Brendan Driscoll
