Gr. 5-8. These attractive titles in the World Art and Culture series attempt a daunting task: surveying the diverse indigenous art of a continent and a country from prehistory to the present. Considering the broad mission and the minimal length, the books do a fine job. Both begin with a few pages of cultural history that introduces ancient civilizations, European invasion, and struggles for independence. Later spreads give examples of architecture, sculpture, pottery, textiles, and other art forms, often noting why and how traditional objects were made. The texts are straightforward and concise, but it's the excellent selection of high-quality color photos that really stand out. Sharp images that show the extraordinary detail in stylized North African cave paintings, Aztec Sunstones, and others works will encourage readers to reflect on the complexity of ancient worlds and to draw connections to today. Final chapters about the impact of globalization on the arts raise excellent points for discussion. The back matter includes suggested resources and a glossary of boldface terms in the text.
