In this Fifth Edition of their best-selling Social Statistics for a Diverse Society, Chava Frankfort-Nachmias and Anna Leon-Guerrero use straightforward, conversational prose and emphasize common sense as they demonstrate the link between the practice of statistics and important social issues. The book helps students learn key sociological concepts through real research examples related to the dynamic relationship between race, class, gender, and other social variables. An emphasis on SPSS (version 16.0) throughout the book, in conjunction with General Social Survey data, introduces students to one of the most commonly used analytical software packages. Each chapter ends with a demonstration of a related SPSS procedure, along with a set of useful exercises to help students practice what they learn.

Review:

"This book is the best I have seen on the market. It is the only book I have seen that manages to teach both statistics and a great deal of social science."

(Tom Linneman From the Reviews of Previous Editions)

"My student evaluations from using the first edition of the book were positive in marked contrast to the evaluations of other statistics texts I have used in previous courses. Students like the real world examples and exercises."

(Meg Sandifer From the Reviews of Previous Editions)

"Social Statistics for a Diverse Society is excellent and extremely useful. Time and time again, I found the authors approached material in the same way I did, using a more discursive, conceptual rather than mathematical presentation. Students really loved this book and I received numerous comments to this effect¾ a real first!"

(Pamela Stone From the Reviews of the Previous Editions)

"The authors have done an excellent job in linking social issues with statistical techniques. This allows a student to learn how social scientists start with a questions and then use a variety of statistical techniques to answer that question. In the process, students are learning key sociological concepts related to race, gender, class, and age. The book demonstrates the sociological imagination in action."

(Janet Wilmoth From the Reviews of Previous Editions)

"The authors have shown how integrating issues of diversity can be done in a way that furthers the traditional objectives of statistics courses, but also in a way that makes science a warmer classroom and career climate for women and students of color. I am not overstating the case to say that this book is pathbreaking."

(Kate Berheide Fromt he Reviews of Previous Editions)
