A Bird Flies...A Classmate Dies The blue pickup eased to a stop on a deserted dirt fire road that wound through tall pines serving as watershed for Styles Reservoir. He turned the truck around to point back in the direction of the main road. He then unwrapped the blanket around the scope mounted rifle and grasped it by the stalk as he slid out of the passenger door, down a gully, and into the woods.
It was only a short distance to the spot he'd picked on his earlier visit. The bushes would hide him in a good shooting position above the reservoir shoreline where the birders congregated every Sunday at 2:00 PM during migration. He checked his watch. It was 2:22.
Looking down toward the shore, he could see about a dozen birdwatchers of mixed gender crowded around six mounted telescopes pointed at the wooded shoreline. All had binoculars slung around their necks and would take turns looking through the any of the more powerful scopes fixed on a bird of interest. E.F. sighted through his own scope until he found the face of Henry Barnes. He got a side view of Henry's head bent low to look through his telescope at a rare feathered find. With a few distance corrections on the range finder, the rifle was ready.
Down below, Barnes had brought the group to a peak of excitement about the bird he'd zeroed in on his scope. Henry always spotted the unusual ones and he'd identified it as a Bohemian Waxwing, a rare Arctic interloper that'd somehow made it to four thousand miles south of its normal habitat.
The rush was on to sight the other telescopes onto the bird's coordinates. Henry lifted his head from the telescope to share the good fortune with an eager lady. She turned to him with a smile of thanks and started to approach the eyepiece, but was puzzled by the strange red spot on Henry's right temple.
It could have been the sound of a gunshot, the woman's scream, or both that startled the Bohemian Waxwing into fast wing-beating flight.
