Born in California and educated at Colorado College and Berkeley, Hawthorne "Hawk" Mills spent most of his working life as a U.S. Foreign Service officer and international peacekeeping official. His public service career spanned the years of the Cold War, from 1945 as a young sailor in the Pacific to 1990 helping enforce the security provisions of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty. After his retirement, Hawk and his wife Diana settled on an island sheep farm in New Zealand. Their four children live in four different continents, which makes regular visits a challenge.
