Due to the uncontained Florida wildfires of 1998, twelve-year-old Wesley is forced to evacuate his home and leave his two dogs behind. After his mother’s unsuccessful attempt to retrieve the family pets, Wesley teams up with his former neighbor and best friend, Jules, in order to rescue his beloved dogs. Forced to sneak through back yards and ride over uneven terrain, the duo encounters an angry policeman, high fences, and Jules’ mischievous younger brother, “Peanut,” who joins the mission unexpectedly. After finally reaching his house, Wesley discovers there is no way out of the neighborhood. Tommy, Wesley’s nemesis, enters the cast of players and adds yet another facet to the growing problem. Wesley finds that his inner strength is much more powerful than he ever could have imagined. Together, Wesley and Jules battle the neighborhood bully, their egos, and the wildfires to save the dogs and themselves.
