Valume Lune Tiltu is a prince who's expected to take the throne, but a simple coronation will not land him the crown. Joined by the mirror spirit Alamine, he must travel across Japan, making contracts with the masters of spirit. As confirmation for each of his agreements, he is presented with one piece of a symbol, and only when this symbol is whole will he become king. But Tiltu not only collects marks from masters to reach his goal of being a ruler, he also makes new friends along the way, friends that are in desperate need of his company. Join the prince, with his newfound chums, inside a world of fantasy that will one day be the domain of Prince Tiltu.

Grade 4-8-A series debut about a supernatural prince in his quest for the throne. To be crowned king, Prince Varumu must make a pact with each of the giant spirit masters inhabiting the land. He has spent nine years trying to accomplish this, and he is heartbroken to discover that his father has passed away in his absence. Now all the alliances that had been held together by the king's pacts are all the more urgent to renew. Varumu's magical world intersects with a contemporary Japan, where the prince seems drawn to lonely children who seem to have few adults in their lives. Like many recent manga titles, the book reads from right to left. Readers will be attracted to the expressively drawn characters, but children new to the genre may find the story difficult to follow, both in format and plot. However, manga fans will enjoy it.-Dawn Rutherford, Kings County Library System, Bellevue, WA
